 This is my first attempt at blogging which I am doing on a word document. I have yet to figure out how to put it on the website but more about that later. The webpage has only just gone live and being a dinosaur on anything remotely concerned with a computer it’s going to be a case of sock it and see. The story of the cover design

  This is, in reality, the story of Sengamo.  Over the last two years I have spent hours looking at the artwork on covers of books in bookshops. Very few inspired me. I came up with various designs of my own, all of which were gracefully rejected by my editor, Lucy Beevor. Then, last January I walked into an apartment at the Waterfront in Cape Town and there on the wall was the picture of an African soldier who I immediately christened Sengamo. Do we have a destiny in life or is our existence a series of sliding doors? I don’t really know. Sometimes I wish I had started writing before I built houses but then, when I sit down now and think about it, I reckon I should have no regrets at this time of my life. At least I had the opportunity – and an understanding wife – to be able to see the project through. I was 59 years old when I retired.
